What's Emotional Intelligence?

Psychologists say we are of two minds: rational and emotional. The place where the two overlap is considered the wise mind.

Put simply, Emotional Intelligence is the area of intelligence responsible for our ability to manage ourselves, and our relationships with others. Every day, both in our personal and work lives, opportunities and challenges present themselves. It's EQ -- the emotional equivalent to IQ -- that enables us to recognize and move toward opportunity and enables us to meet life's challenges.

EQ is one of the fastest growing professional growth tools that is used to tap into the wisdom and creativity of the “wise mind” or where the rational and emotional minds intersect. It’s impossible to separate emotions from thoughts and decision making.

EQ is consciously choosing thoughts, feelings and actions to get optimal results in your professional and personal relationships.

  • Increasing Emotional Intelligence is like increasing the wise mind.
  • EQ is the deciding factor that determines if we make lemonade when life hands us lemons, or spend our life stuck in bitterness.
  • EQ is the deciding factor between finding and living from our life's passion or if we just pass the time away.

IQ versus EQ

In the business world, we've relied solely on the rational mind - measured in IQ - for its analytical and reasoning power. While the rational mind is important for business success, research shows that emotional, social and communication skills are what truly help individuals perform. It's EQ - the emotional equivalent to IQ - that enables us to recognize and move toward opportunity and meet life's challenges. Emotional intelligence is whole-brain thinking that determines if we make lemonade when life hands us lemons. It determines whether we live from our life's passion or just pass the time away. And, it determines whether we work in harmony and collaboration or in discord and isolation.

Research shows that success at work is 80-90% EQ and only 10-20% IQ. Unlike IQ, Emotional Intelligence can be learned and developed. In fact, research shows that EQ increases with age. People in their 40s and 50s have greater EQ skills than they had earlier in life.

For jobs of all kinds, EQ is twice as important as IQ plus technical skills. Emotional intelligence is more than 85% of what sets star performers from the average.

What's in it for your company?

Research shows that people with high levels of EQ experience more career success, build stronger personal relationships, lead more effectively, enjoy better health, and motivate themselves and others to greater accomplishment. EQ helps with:

  • Making effective decisions
  • Creative problem solving
  • Cultivating leadership skills at all levels
  • Managing stress
  • Expressing emotions appropriately
  • Achieving goals
  • Recovering faster from setbacks
  • Handling relationships masterfully
  • Inclusivity of differences
  • Communication obstacles
